Linkin Park Will Perform 'The Catalyst' At 2010 VMAs

From MTV.com

Linkin Park just premiered their murky, mercurial video for "The Catalyst," and for the second consecutive week, the song is #1 on the Billboard rock songs chart, but so far, they've yet to perform the song live.

But on September 12, at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, that will change. Because Linkin Park have just been added to an ever-growing list of performers for the big show, and they'll be playing "The Catalyst," for the first time on television.

"After two years of working on our new album, we're looking forward to sharing our first live performance of new music with our fans around the world on the MTV Awards," Chester Bennington said in a statement about the show.

It's an appropriately big stage for the song, the first single off the band's much-anticipated new album, A Thousand Suns, which hits stores on September 14.

Other confirmed performers for the 2010 VMAs include Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Paramore, Drake, B.o.B, Usher and Florence and the Machine. Travie McCoy, Jason Derülo and Robyn will also join VMA house artist deadmau5 for a series of intimate performances.

Confirmed presenters for the show include Justin Timberlake, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj and Trey Songz. More performers and presenters will be announced in the coming days. Comedian Chelsea Handler will host.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the Best New Artist video through September 12.

Linkin Park's 'The Catalyst' Video: Kiss The Past Goodbye

From mtv.com:

Linkin Park are probably one of the 10 biggest rock acts on the planet. I mention this mostly because: A) It's true, and B) It makes everything they've done post-Hybrid Theory (their big breakout album) all the more admirable.

They have never been afraid to push the envelope and try new things. This is easy to do if you are a band that has nothing to lose, but in LP's case, it borders on insanity. Their albums are the kinds of things labels schedule their financial quarters around. They're tent poles (or life preservers) meant to keep things from sagging too low or sinking too deep. The danger of alienating their fanbase is very real, and the results could be catastrophic.

Still, with each successive album, Linkin Park push even further into the void, and, in the process, they leave their nü-metal roots in the dust. At this point, they're barely the same band they were back in 2000, and any similarities they still share with their Hybrid past will almost certainly be erased with their upcoming A Thousand Suns, an album they've gone to great lengths to christen as a bold new direction for the group, public opinion be damned.

We finally got to see the first fruits of that reinvention with the murky, mercurial video for "The Catalyst." Directed once again by band DJ Joseph Hahn, it's an ominous, elemental thing, full of smoke and unseen flames, charred earth and rising tides. It may very well be a chilling, post-apocalyptic preview of mankind's future, or it might just be a really cool, really art-y video, the kind that big, important rock bands tend to make (and at this point, LP are most certainly both of those things). It's really up to you to decide. Though, really, it works either way.

But mostly, "The Catalyst" serves as a preview of what fans can expect on A Thousand Suns, which is basically what bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell told MTV News earlier this month. "There are certainly dark, trying times ahead," the band seems to be saying. "Get ready."

And to that point, it's telling that Linkin Park are barely even in the video — or, more specifically, when they are, they're shrouded in smoke or submerged in water. You can infer from that what you'd like, but I see it as the band letting fans know that they practically died to make this album, that they went through hell and high water to bring it to fruition. It may be subliminal, but it's definitely there. And it's why I admire Linkin Park as much as I do.

So if you loved Linkin Park for their rapping or their angry outbursts or even their Gundam obsession, you're probably going to be a bit disappointed with "The Catalyst," not to mention A Thousand Suns. But that's really the point, isn't it? Great bands push themselves, great bands are unafraid to fail. And, dare I say it, with both their new video and their new album, Linkin Park may very well have become a great band.

MTV Behind The Scenes Catalyst Footage

MTV have posted another behind the scenes clip of "The Catalyst" video on their website, in preparation of tonight's midnight EST release. MTV say more behind the scenes footage is to come in the article.

"My voice is a little tired, because I'm singing on this one. And it's a lot of singing; it's been a long day, a lot of smoke [being used]," Shinoda told us on the set of the video. "Once again, Mr. Hahn is in the driver's seat, and we have faith in where he'll take us."

And Shinoda isn't the only one who got smoked out. Hahn shot other scenes in which he sealed his bandmates in a glass case, then filled the thing with clouds of smoke (he also shot the performance high speed, which, when slowed down, makes for some arresting visuals). And we haven't even mentioned the piles of multicolored dust he covered the band in, which made for some messy — and totally excellent — footage.

There's still plenty of behind-the-scenes footage to show you, but for right now, check out this exclusive sneak peek at the making of "The Catalyst" in the above video. You'll see, once and for all, that Linkin Park truly suffer for their art.

Phoenix MTV Interview

Linkin Park Say New Single 'The Catalyst' Is 'A Risk, But Worth It'
'We wanted a track that represented where the album was going to be and how it was going to work,' says bassist Phoenix Farrell.

Last week, gamers everywhere thrilled to the new trailer for the upcoming "Medal of Honor," which was directed by Linkin Park's Joseph Hahn and features the band's brand-new single, "The Catalyst."

And while the trailer no doubt had "MOH" fanatics going crazy, it may have left LP fans feeling a bit confused. Because "The Catalyst" is undoubtedly unlike any song the band has ever released. A moody, synth-heavy, decidedly doomy rumination on the broken times in which we live, it seems to back up the group's claims that their new album, A Thousand Suns, will be a drastic departure from anything they've done in the past.

And that, according to LP bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell, was precisely the point.

"We wanted a track that represented where the album was going to be and how it was going to work, and this was really the track to do that. ... It's a risk, but [it's] worth it," he told MTV News earlier this week. "We've known [the album is] going to be different, and if fans were expecting Hybrid Theory or Meteora, they're going to be surprised. It's going to take people some time to figure it out and know what to do with it."

Farrell wouldn't go into greater detail about just how the new album, due September 14, will differ from Linkin Park's previous efforts, but any fan with a pair of ears should be able to tell based on "The Catalyst" alone. The songs are bigger, deeper, decidedly weirder. And while Farrell didn't exactly back up frontman Chester Bennington's earlier claims that A Thousand Suns is a full-blown "concept" album, he didn't really deny them either.

"I've never liked the title 'concept record,' to me that holds up the idea of Tommy or The Wall. And I love those records, but this is not that," he said. "There are a couple threads that run throughout it, but, for us, the only concept is that it's not intended to be a collection of individual songs. It's constructed in a way and thought of in terms of 'How will it flow?' I would love ... in this day and age, for our fans just once to sit down and listen to it from front to back. We want it to work as an experience."

And to that end, Farrell said the band always wanted to tie "The Catalyst" into a video game of some sort. The way they see it, it only adds another layer to the experience. So when the "Medal of Honor" folks approached them, they leapt at the opportunity. Though, sadly, working with Electronic Arts — the publisher and developer of the "MOH" series — hasn't improved their gaming skills any. But you can't really blame LP for that. After all, they've been working on A Thousand Suns for a long time now.

"I loved the old 'Medal of Honor' games, but since we've been working on the new album — and really, since I had kids — I've kind of hung it up for a while," Farrell laughed. "It sucks because now I have a younger brother who's 15 and when we play against each other, it's not even competitive. It's ridiculous. And it pisses me off. He's laughing and sh--. He's killing me with his knife."

NEW LINKIN PARK APP

From mikeshinoda.com

As anyone who follows the band knows, we usually have a LOT of stuff going on. The tough part for us is finding a simpler way to keep you guys up-to-date. We’re trying out a new solution: the new Linkin Park App, for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android.

The app is FREE. It has all the obvious stuff, like news and tour dates, but also plays all our LPTV episodes and videos, finds other LP fans in your area (if you want), and collects all Linkin Park online activity, all in one place. You can connect it to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, so you can respond to a blog post or video without opening and closing a bunch of windows. You can also shoot photos at the concert, and immediately upload them online using the app…and it ranks users based on activity, so if you’re active on our sites, you’ll get recognized.

It currently supports English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Dutch, and Turkish. More to come.

For iTunes: http://awe.sm/595m7
For Android: http://awe.sm/595mD

Also, for those of you who have already downloaded the app, I just created a thread on the message board to discuss ways to make it better: http://www.linkinpark.com/forum/topics/new-linkin-park-app

Linkin Park Logs First No. 1 Debut On Rock Songs

From billboard.com:

Linkin Park posts the first No. 1 debut in the 14-month history of the Rock Songs chart, as "The Catalyst" launches with 12.2 million audience impressions.

The cut eclipses the chart's previous highest-starting song, Pearl Jam's "The Fixer," which arrived at No. 2 a year ago this month.

Rock Songs premiered the week of June 20, 2009. The Nielsen BDS-based radio airplay survey measures the most-heard titles on more than 180 alternative, adult alternative and mainstream rock stations.

"The Catalyst" concurrently opens on the Alternative Songs chart at No. 3, marking the list's loftiest arrival since Linkin Park's own "What I've Done" bowed at No. 1 in April 2007.

"The Catalyst" is the first single from the band's fourth studio album, "A Thousand Suns," due Sept. 14.

New LINKIN PARK album | A THOUSAND SUNS

Message from Mike on knowngallery.com:

Hey Casey...Thanks for reaching out. The pre-order went up today--we're really excited. It's the first time we've been able to sell direct-to-fan from our website, so we wanted to go big: if you buy anything (even the skate deck or the t-shirt), you get the digital version of the album for free. Everyone who buys anything gets that, plus access to presale concert tickets, so you get better seats (But you don't need to worry about the seats thing--you know we'll always have room for you and the crew at the show). And the digital versions of everything as early as humanly possible.

The skate deck is a real winner. Pro-level, skate-able quality, sick art. Hand signed by all the guys in the band, and limited to 1000 copies in the world. $99.99

As for A THOUSAND SUNS...The album is our most adventurous yet. We took a lot of risks on this one: some of the craziest sounds and a couple of the longest songs in our career. As a general idea, it's kinda a response to what's going on in popular music: too many people are focused on "singles" and putting things together in poppy, bite sized pieces...so we decided to do the opposite. We're making a case for "the album." If someone wants to listen to it in pieces, it works that way...but they'll be missing out on the experience you get on if you hear it as a whole. We really put our hearts into this one; I think it's pretty special. It comes out on September 14th.

Dark as Day Follow Up with Levi Holiman

From lpassociation.com

Last month we reported details of a movie listed on IMDB titled "Dark as Day" directed by Levi Holiman, which was speculated to star Mike Shinoda & Chester Bennington in a casting role. Well, not liking speculation, the LPA set out to confirm or disprove these rumours, and give you fans a little insight on the status of this project.

After speaking to Levi Holiman myself personally, here is what we discussed, and what Levi had to say on the project.

- On how Levi met Chester, and involved him within the project:
Chester and I went to High School together in AZ. I had written the "Dark as Day" script, 5 years ago, after moving to Los Angeles. I ran into Chester on the set of "Bleed it out." We hadn't seen each other since 96 maybe? So I told him about the script and asked if he'd be interested in reading it. He gave me his info and I sent it to him.

About a week later, he emailed me and agreed to play a part in the film. We initially wanted to see if he would be good for the lead but because of his busy schedule, he felt it would be better for him to make an appearance in the film rather than committing to the lead. Understandable.

- On whether or not Mike Shinoda will be involved:
I don't know Mike Shinoda though. As far as I know, Chester will be the only one from LP involved. I do love Mike and his music. SOB is one of my favorite groups. I listen to "Second to none" almost everyday on my ipod.

- On Mike's name being listed on IMDB:
I just checked imdb and have no idea how Mike's name got on the castlist. It would be great to have Mike but I have no other information on that.

- More on Chester committing to the project:
The first time I saw Chester act was in high school. He was good. I remember him chasing someone on stage with a fire poker. I think he played an old man in the play. But that was back when he had hair and glasses like John Lennon. When I asked if he wanted to move back to acting later his eyes perked up and he seemed very excited.

- Chester's role in the movie:
All I can tell you with regard to the film is that Chesters character is going to be a challenge for him. Emotionally, I'm going to ask him to push himself. But I'm not worried whether he could pull it off or not. He's a pro and he's been performing for a while.

He doesn't play a bad guy in the movie. He's a good guy that has made a lot of bad choices and when his character is introduced in the film, he has realized the damage he has done and is ready to atone for his sins. I'm really excited to see Chesters angle on the character and am very confident that whether you are an LP fan or not, people will really dig his character.

- The vision for Dark As Day:
"Dark as Day" is like the the dark back alley for a fairy tale. It's in the same vein as "Jacobs Ladder", "Donnie Darko" and "Vanilla Sky." If the fans like those movies, I think they'll like DAD. If they don't, they might want to put my head on a stick.

- The status of the project:
Financing has been quite difficult because of the state of the economy. We are hoping to find an independent source that will put in 7 figures and the search is still on.

- Levi's kind words in regards to the LPA:
I love that you guys are doing so much to promote other projects that involve Chester. For no name guys like me, Chester coming on board and you guys writing articles about this could make all the difference in getting established as an artist.

Mike's LP Community Tour

From LPLive.net
Mike just did chats on the LPU, LP.com, and Ustream. Highlights are as follows.

  • Chester is doing a very different kind of screaming that is very exciting. Mike referred to it as "weird" and "losing his mind kind of screaming."
  • There will be heavy tracks on the album.
  • There will be gang vocals from the entire band on a couple songs.
  • Mike and Chester do back and forth vocals on almost every song.
  • Mike will be rapping.
  • The music video for The Catalyst is not yet finished.
  • The standard CD, Special Edition & Deluxe Box Set will have their own art books and cases.
  • Both new and old songs will be played on tour.
  • "That effect on the voices in The Catalyst is a layer of a flanger, a modulation effect, and some other stuff."
  • "We had fun with effects on this record...lots of "ear candy"...on many instruments."
  • "It's not really a concept record. It's kind of a concept record, but only in the sense that the concept is more about the execution of it. It is not a rock opera. You guys may feel like it's got a common thread that kinda goes through from song to song and all the way down the album and that is definitely intentional. There's multiple layers and meaning."
  • Neal Avron has mixed the record. He mixed Minutes to Midnight as well.
  • LP will not be on the soundtracks to Saw 7 or Transformers 3.
  • Mike and Joe both contributed to the artwork. Mike praised Joe's work.
"There will be gang vocals from the entire band on a couple songs. " That sounds pretty cool.
What do you think ?
